The winner of the Loy Memorial 5k have both been in the winner's circle before.

Alex Stern, a 2007 graduate of Perry High School, was the first athlete across the finish line with a time of 19:36. Stern also won the race in 2005 and 2007 as he just moved back into Stark County with his family. The next four male finishers were close as former East Canton grad Chase Shrum was second in 21:42 and won the "Ben Loy" award as the first Hornet alumnus to finish. Jason Shilling of Canton was third while D.J. Hill was fourth. Tim Stern was fifth among the male runners

The female winner is a familiar name in East Canton - Aimee Shilling, who has won the race several times. The former Aimee Tallman was a 1998 graduate from East Canton to be the first East Canton alum in the girls division. She was also the overall female winner with a time of 22:17. Louisville 14-year-old Emma Patterson was the second female with a time of 22:23. Meredith Loy was third for the women while 13-year-old Colletta Miller of Minerva was fourth. Rounding out the top five women was the wife of the men's winner, Lori Stern.

The 1-mile race for kids 14 and under was an exciting race as East Canton's Andrew Wade used good tactics to pull out the victory. The 12-year old crossed the line in 5:59. The top five boys also included 12-year-old Gabriel Shilling (6:32), 14-year-old Kyle Crable (6:35), 9-year-old Luke Vlacovsky (6:56) and 8-year-old Lance Vlacovsky (7:09).

The girl's 1-mile race was the closest of the day as Isabella Kline edged Brooklyn Donaldson by two seconds. Both East Canton 13 year-olds raced well as Kline was timed in 6:02 and Donaldson in 6:04. Ten-year-old Audrey Wadewas third in 6:46 while Annie Carter, 11, ran 7:28 for fourth. Rayla Clapper was the fifth girl as the 9-year-old clocked a time of 8:53.
