July 2, 2008

Kenneth D. Varian, a 1998 graduate of East Canton High School and son of Dr. Dean and Ruth Varian of East Canton, received a PhD degree in medical science on June 8 at The Ohio State University.

After earning a bachelor of science degree at Mount Union College, Kenneth enrolled in the Ohio State College of Medicine in July, 2002.

He was selected to participate in a program, limited to six students per year, called the Medical Scientist, or MD-PhD, program. Successful candidates are awarded both a doctor of medicine degree and a doctor of philosophy in medical science. The program takes from seven to eight years to complete.

For the past four years, in preparation for the PhD, Kenneth has been conducting original research in heart muscle physiologiy. He has completed three published research projects as first author, three as second author, and he is currently involved in six others projects still in progress. He has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings.

In July he resumes work toward a doctor of medicine degree. This will be completed in June 2010, after which his plans are to enter into a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology. His long range plans are to teach cardiology in an academic medical institution while continuing a career in medical research.

Kenneth and his wife Melinda reside in Columbus.
