Third-graders at East Canton Elementary stayed busy and kept learning right up to the last days of school, when a Science Fair and Invention Convention was held.
According to Stephanie Kramer, a teacher at the school, the idea for the celebration came from the staff's amazement of the students' enthusiasm for science and exploration of the world.
The flyer for the event said: "We believe that although teachers, peers and society plays major roles in a child's education, parents are the child's first teachers, and the home is a child's first classroom."
This community-wide event not only included students with their science projects, but also community members who were honorary judges, who provide snacks and who volunteered. In addition, National Honor Society members from the high school helped out as volunteers.
The top three scientist for the school at the science fair were as follows: Jasper Dews, who did a project on used tires; Jager Kendrick, whose project was on the life cycle of chickens and ducks; Lauren Wines, who did her project on hot-air balloons.
The top three inventors were Brittni Wenger, "Brittni's Good Boy"; Asa Roberts, "Don't Throw Away Those Lightbulbs"; and Joe Miller, "Launching on the Go."
Honor judges included Mayor Reggie McGee and representatives from the following businesses or organizations: East Canton Library, Foltz Community Center, East Canton Printing, Dollar General, Expresso Pizza, Suzanne's Subway and Stark C&D Landfill.
Refreshments were provided by Subway Inc., McDonald's, East Canton PTO and Shearers.
