FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
* A large group of people attended a meeting at Sandy Valley High School to discuss a proposed expansion of American Landfill in Sandy Township. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency hosted the meeting, and many questions such as what considerations the EPA gave the residents in the area when they make their decisions on these issues.
* The East Canton ASA softball team finished the season with a 12-4 record. Hilary Griffin and Letitia Bittinger combined for 190 strikeouts in 101 innings pitched.
* Teens at the Multi-County Attention Center on Faircrest in Canton Township were visited by many "heroes" to learn about service to their community and to God. Jamie Rhoads, recreation coordinator, planned a day when the teens would be visited by such groups as Canton Township Fire Department, University Hospital's of Cleveland Helicopter Rescue Unit, Stark County Sheriff's Mounted Police and even "Robo Cop."
10 YEARS AGO
* Ground breaking was done to mark the beginning of the U.S. Route 30 project. Starting at the intersection of US 30 and Belden Ave, plans to stretch the road 1 1/2 miles eastward to Trump Ave were underway. The project also included the widening of Trump Ave. A completion date of 2020 was also set for future plans to extend Route 30 eastward in a 35 mile stretch in segments.
* Magnolia's Isaac Miller Inn was one of 16 winners out of 500 to be featured in "Midwest Living" magazine in the "1998 Hometown Pride Awards." The Inn was a winner in the "Historic Preservation" category. Along with recognition, the Magnolia Historical Society also received $1,000.
* Area players competed in the East-West game. Representing Canton South was Josh Veigel and Ben Lopes. For Sandy Valley was Derek Leeders and Scott Eckinger and competing for East Canton was Ben Hall and Kenny Varian.
25 YEARS AGO
* Robert Wardle and Michael Wardle, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Wardle of East Canton, were both recent college graduates. Robert received a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Akron. Mike received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Mount Union College. A graduation party was held for both at the home of their parents.
* Lanette Icardi of North Industry was a member of the Youth Witness Tour/Youth Musicale '83, which was entertaining throughout Ohio. The choir was performing at Otterbein Church.
* Magnolia's outstanding citizen, Warren and Sally James, were honored during the Magnolia Homecoming. The Sandy Valley Community Choir and a local band called High Voltage would present entertainment during the event.
50 YEARS AGO
* Elio Bafile of Waynesburg and James Parmenter of Magnolia, junior at Sandy Valley High School, would attend Buckeye Boys State at Camp Perry. Attendance at Boys State was made possible by the Waynesburg Rotary Club, Magnolia Lions Club and American Legion-Sandy Valley Post.
* Terry Wenger, a graduate of Canton South High School, was selected as Greater Canton's Male Teen of the Year. Wenger and other teens were honored at a dinner held at St. Francis Hotel in Canton. Terry had also been salutatorian of his class and was named "Mr. Southerner" by his classmates. He planned to attend Western Reserve University.
* Lester C. Snyder of East Canton's Lowell D. Oberly American Legion Post 667 was named commander of the Stark County American Legion Council. Clifford F. Toalston of East Canton was elected to serve a three-year term as executive committeeman.
100 YEARS AGO
* Grover Cleveland, twice president of the United States, died at 8:40 a.m. on June 24, at his home in Princeton, N.J. He had lived there since his retirement as the nation's chief executive 12 years before. He was 71 years old upon his death, which was from stomach and kidney problems.
* The board of education of Sandy Township met and hired teachers for the Plains School District. They included Susie E. Dale, Claude C. Miller and Mamie Harmon.
* Harry Mottice and John Long attended the festival Saturday night in Mapleton. Harry brought Mary Cable home from the festival.
