* Congratulations! AMVETS Post 124 had the honor of giving away 10 $500 scholarships for the ninth year thanks to the Joseph Alvarez Scholarship Fund and yearly golf outing and donations. This year recipients are: Timken High ROTC, Shauna L. Reikowski and Stephen E. Schaffran; and Canton South High School, Erika Kerr, Donald Jensen II and Emily N. Wojtaszek. The AMVETS Post 124 recipients were Jennifer L. Osborn; Glenoak High; Kristian D. Hoffman, Canton South High; Brina M. Maydock, McKinley High; Lydia G. Malavite, Sandy Valley High and Kirstie J. Louis, Washington High.

* Canton South AARP 4885 held its annual picnic on Wednesday, June 25. The tour group recently went on a O'Peaceful Days Brown Bag Mystery Tour on June 17. It was a very nice trip enjoyed by all who attended. The next trip will be held on Aug. 12 to Buckeye Lake, the Historical Society Museum, Historic Davis-Shai House and the Licking County Arts Museum. The next meeting will be the Executive Board on Sept. 18, with the general meeting held on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

* The Canton Local Retired Cafeteria Workers will meet on July 8 at Southside Grinderz's at noon for lunch. Any cafeteria worker is invited to attend the gatherings.

* The Class of '59 Luncheon Group met on June 18 at Southside Grinderz. The next meeting of the group will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the restaurant with more discussion and planning for the 50-year class reunion. The reunion will be held sometime next summer. Any classmate is invited to attend the gatherings, which are held the third Wednesday of each month at Southside Grinderz in the Southgate Shopping Center. * Congratulations to Mary Pusharich for being named Rotary Citizen of the Year. You will see Mary busy helping all over town. Mary oversees the clothing drives and food pantry at East Canton Church of God. And if you stop in at Dollar General, you will see her working there from time to time. When you see Mary be sure to say congratulations and give her a big smile, because she always has one for you.

* East Canton Rotary elected new officers. They are president Dianna Braucher, president elect Bill Wolf, vice president Kim Weiss, treasurer Tom Nieschwitz, secretary Jenninngs Tallman, and sergeant ofarms Jake Lesher.

* East Canton Walking Club had 18 walkers on Tuesday night, from 7- 8 p.m., at the East Canton Village Park on North Werely Avenue. Earning certificates for walking six weeks are: Jackie Branch, (missed her from last weeks list) Jim Davis, Janet Elkins, Barb Hall, Barb Trossantt. Everyone is welcome. Walking club is free, fun and healthy. Stop at the top shelter to register. For more information, call 330-488-2622. If it rains, walk the halls at the high school and enter under the bridge.

* Senior Flex welcomed back Janet and Ray Elkins and new member Liz Stertzbach. It was nice to have Bob Smith back from a week vacation at Myrtle Beach, where he played golf and shopped with his wife Ruth. Hope you can join the Senior Flex class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Foltz Center from 9-10 a.m. (No class on the second Wednesday of each month, due to Senior Social). * Senior Social at Foltz Center will meet next on Wednesday, July 9. The program will be presented by the Visiting Physicians. Come at 10:30 a.m. to hear Julie Malone tell us about those options of physicians who still make house calls. Stay for lunch at 11:30 a.m., which will be rigatoni, meatballs and salad. Stick around and play Bingo, card games or just visit. Blood pressure screening will be from 10-11:30 a.m., courtesy of Green Medows Health & Wellness Center.

* There will be no AARP meetings in July or August. See you in September.

* The Canal Society will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, July 10, at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the firehouse.

* Sandy Valley junior catcher Jeff Brothers was recently named to the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Division III first team. Also congratulations to senior, Samantha Paul who was recently named as a first-team pick on the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association's All-Ohio team. Rounding off the SV All-Ohio list is Julia Cain in track and field for the pole vault.

* Congratulations to Carolynn DeLong, who was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Greater Stark County Urban League.

* Music in the Park will be held every Monday night in July. Different styles and types of music will be presented by local talent. Bring a chair and enjoy the free entertainment.

* The Magnolia Dragstrip will no longer be open on Saturdays due to the decreased car count. However, they will be open Saturday, July 5, as part of the July 4 weekend. Winners from June 22 were Ty Rankl (Box/Super Pro) and Chad Gardner (No Box/Pro).

* Oltie Pickens was recently named Aultman Hospital's Volunteer of the Year Award. At 76 years old, he has spent more than 4,800 hours in the past 14 years making patients at Aultman Hospital smile and feel comfortable as he delivers newspapers and mail. Congratulations to him!

* Farm Bureau Advisory Council 2-L met June 20 at the farm home of Carl and Louise Anthony, of rural East Canton. Ten members were present. Mrs. Anthony gave devotions, and vice president Vera Rummell conducted ther brief business meeting. The topic "Clean Ohio Bond Package" was given by discussion leader Carl Rinehart. Refreshmen,ts were served by the Anthonys.

The July 18, 8 p.m. meeting will be hosted by Richard and Mary Henning of rural Paris.
