To the editor:
A thank you is extended to the businesses, industries, service organizations and individuals in the Sandy Valley area for the financial support extended to the Sandy Valley Post 432 and the Isaac L. Kinney Post 244 of the American Legion to make the American Legion Buckeye Girls State and Boys State a success again this year.
We also extend a big thank you to Mr. Jim Rarric, Sandy Valley school counselor, for his efforts to promote this program to the student body.
Through those efforts, 10 girls and 14 boys will spend nine days in June at Ashland and Bowling Green universities, respectively, learning the function and workings of the state, county and local governments. This is a hands-on program that is operated by the citizens of the Legion Girls and Boys State. They elect and operate state, county and local governments in the same way as the real governments are comprised and operated.
Candidates for the program are recommended by the school counselor and chosen by face-to-face interviews by a committee appointed by the two Legion posts. The decisions are extremely difficult due to the quality of the candidates recommended. As these students are interviewed one thing is readily evident, young people such as those interviewed show a very promising future for our country. They are the best!
Thanks again to all who were involved in helping this program to succeed.
Bill Bowman
Area Chairman of Boys and Girls State
American Legion Posts 244 and 432
