FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK * Alivia Trbovich of Waynesburg was named Jr. Dairy Princess by Carroll County Dairy Promotions. Alivia was an eighth-grader in the Sandy Valley School District. Katie Burkhart, also a Sandy Valley student, was also in consideration for the honor. * Jim Abbott, a retired Major League pitcher, spoke in Canton at the ARC of Stark County banquet. The evening is set aside to honor those who overcome disabilities. Abbott who was born with only one hand, had become a successful pitcher with the Yankees, White Sox and Angels. Also performing at the event was Tim Baley, a musical savant, who had also overcome a lot to become a world-known pianist. * Beth Sternberg, an East Canton graduate, was named All-American Mideast Conference, for her success as a member of the Walsh University Lady Cavalier basketball team. The three-year letterwinner was leading her team in three-pointers. 10 YEARS AGO * Sarah Davis, Michael Fisher and Jacob Heinbuch, all speech students of Diane Swink at Canton South, competed in the state speech tournament. Davis was fifth in the state in debate, and Heinbuch and Fisher were seventh in duet actors. * Seniors at East Canton High School dined with senior citizens during the annual Senior to Senior Sunday dinner. A few of the seniors shown participating were Noah Timberlake, Justin Jordan, Calvin Snyder, Tiffany Lint and Kari Miller. * Sandy Valley's freshman boys basketball team were PAC-7 champions. The team included Matt Grossi, Kevin Elkins, Tyler Mutigli and Brandon Lancaster. 25 YEARS AGO * Boys basketball teams were seeing tournament action. The Hornets defeated Woodridge in a Class A District game, with Shawn Averette having 15 points. The Cardinals defeated the Minerva Lions three times in the season, the last in the sectional Class AA finals. David Adkins led with 21 points. Unfortunately, Canton South was defeated by the McKinley Bulldogs in Class AAA tournament. It took an overtime for the Bulldogs to win, and Dana Allender led the Cats, with 15 points. * Rosemary Johnson, who was had recently been appointed as Canton Local Superintendent of Schools, was speaking at a leadership conference at Moreland Christian Church. An Osnaburg Township resident, Mrs. Johnson was replacing William Hayden, who had retired. 50 YEARS AGO * The Osnaburg Township Scholarship Foundation had received $500 from Jean Peters Hughes. Peters, a 1944 graduate of East Canton High School, was a Hollywood star and the wife of millionaire Howard Hughes. She wrote a note with her donation, saying, "It's been so long since I've been home. I have filled Howard, my husband, so full of 'country life' that when I finally bring him back, I'm afraid I'll have to rent some wooden pumps, butter churns and potbellied stoves." * Jerry Anderson, 12 years old of Malvern, saved his hunting companion, David Kaser, 11 years old of Waynesburg, from drowning. Jerry managed to keep one foot on the bank, while he pulled David and his dog from the chilly waters of the Little Sandy Creek in Waynesburg. David had been trying to save his dog, when he fell into the water. * Barbara Scott of Waco spent three days in New York City. She traveled there on United Air Lines. 100 YEARS AGO * Grandma Chaddock of Magnolia received 156 postal cards on her 83rd birthday. The cards came from 11 different states. * Lewis H. Rice of East Sparta was awarded a verdict of $1,000 against Jay Farber. A jury in Judge Ambler's court made the decision to pay Rice for the fractured cheek bone he had been given by Farber. A line fence and an old mortgage were the causes of the trouble between the two men. * A certain young woman from Sandyville thinks a certain young man from East Sparta is not "quite as cute as he looks."
