FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK * Harold and Mary Brumby were the featured couple for the Valentine's issue. The two were married for 59 years, but they had dated for five years prior to their wedding day. Both were active members of the Canton South community, as Hal served on the school board, and Mary was a piano teacher and accompanist. They were also active in their church. * The Sandy Valley Cardinal wrestling team won a championship in the Inter-Valley Conference. The Cardinals also had three individual champs-- Lee Barto (119), Justin Flott (130) and Matt Hamsher (HWT). The team was coached by John Groff. * The East Canton Wizards ended their PAC-7 days with 50-42 loss to the Manchester Panthers. Karris Kandel led the Wizard scoring, with 12 points, followed by a double-teamed Katy Arick, who had 11. East Canton athletes would compete in the Portage Trail Conference in the following school year. 10 YEARS AGO * Richard and Polly Bole of East Canton were the featured Valentine couple in the Press-News. The two had been married for 55 years. They met while working at Renner's Drug Store, where Polly worked at the ice cream counter, and Dick helped make the ice cream. Dick remembered when his family survived on $23 a week, and Polly said "bringing Christ into their lives" was what helped them to have a happy marriage for so long. * Tanya Rugani and Blake Dougherty were queen and king during the East Canton Basketball Homecoming. East Canton lost the homecoming game to the Sandy Valley Cardinals. Jeremy Kenney had four treys and led Sandy Valley with 14 points. Ben Sternberg led all scorers with 21. * St. James celebrated Catholic Schools Week with many activities including a day when students could take over a job at the school. Ryan Turner took over Sue Ryan's job as principal, and Jenna Swihart stepped into Tina Welch's secretarial position. 25 YEARS AGO * Lisa Boccuti was named queen of the Canton South Basketball Homecoming. Following the South-Louisville homecoming game on Friday, a dance was held and the theme was "I Want To Know What Love Is." Todd Talkington was the king. The Wildcats defeated Louisville 72-41. * Members of the Sandy Valley gymnastic team, who competed well in a win over South included Karen Devine, Julie Davis and Michele Marcoaldi. South team members included Kim Graham and Laura Foss. * Ken Stocker and Joe McEowen were Scouts of the Month for East Canton Cub Scout Pack 36. Ben Carroll earned his Arrow of Light Award. 50 YEARS AGO * Don Parmenter, a former Sandy Valley athlete, was awarded his freshman football numerals at Baldwin-Wallace College. He received the award from coach Lee Tressel during an appreciation banquet. His junior Yellow Jackets had gone undefeated during the season. * Army Major Sergeant Henry F. Thomas of Canton South received congratulations and a certificate of achievement from Col. Raymond F. Field, adjutant general of the United States Army Ryakyu Islands in Okinawa. Thomas had entered the Army in 1948. * The East Canton Hornets defeated every league team during the season and finished their successful league season by defeating the Lake Blue Streaks 50-46. Vic Mair, the phenomenal junior, led the team with 18 points when they beat Brewster, 68-38, on Saturday night. 100 YEARS AGO * Four horse sled loads of jolly, young people from Mapleton were entertained at Grant Welker's home in Indian Run. Games and music were features of the evening. Oysters and other delicacies were served. * Otho McDannel of Indian Run returned from his western trip. Everyone said he was mistaken about the girls being so sweet on him. The reporter said it was the other way around: Otho was sweet on the girls. * Chalmer Hazlett of the Sandy Valley area was out sleigh riding and smashed his sleigh. "Now, no girls would be able to ride behind Bess," reported the paper. Comments
