A modern parable

By PASTOR JACK WINGATE

East Sparta Christian Church

I don't remember who first sent this to me, but it's worth sharing with you.

One day, a poor boy was hungry, but had only one thin dime. He decided to ask for a meal at the next house, but when a lovely lady answered the door, he lost his nerve.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

As Howard Kelly left that house, his faith in both God and man was stronger.

Many years later that same young woman became critically ill. The doctors were baffled. Specialists were called to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the patient he rose and went to her room. After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly had the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.

She feared to open it, knowing it was huge. Finally she looked, and read these words along the edge ..... "Paid in full with one glass of milk." -- Dr. Howard Kelly.

Ecclesiates 11:1 says "Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again."

The good deed you do today will turn out to benefit you at the least expected time. What seeds of kindness can you sow in 2010?
