Clyde Kemp is the local census office manager, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of Commerce. The Canton office will direct the census count for eastern Ohio from now through the latter part of 2010.

Kemp needs to hire 1,200 people to conduct the 2010 census in 21 eastern counties that stretch from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, from Holmes County to the Pennsylvania line.

The Canton operation needs to fill a variety of positions, including clerks, workers to canvass neighborhoods and supervisors.

All of the jobs are temporary, and some last for only a few weeks. Hourly pay rates in Stark County range from $9.50 to $15.50 depending on the position.

Because the toll-free number has been tied up, anyone interested in applying can call the Canton office directly at (330) 489-4401.

Applicants need to be at least 18 years olds without a felony record. There are no education requirements, but applicants have to take a 30-minute timed exam dealing with reading comprehension and simple math. They also need two forms of ID, which can include a driver's license, Social Security card, passport or birth certificate.

Preference is given to U.S. citizens, and veterans get extra points toward test scores. Also, applicants must speak English, and those with bilingual skills are encouraged to apply.

A vehicle and valid driver's license are also needed. Workers who use their vehicles get 58.5 cents per mile.

Office workers will be hired later this month.
