Christmas trees can be recycled in many ways

There are many good uses for live Christmas trees once the Christmas season is over, including providing shelter for animals and birds or for fish habitat.

If you do not have a use for your tree, you could "recycle" it at one of the following Christmas tree drop-off sites in Carroll County: the Carroll County Fairgrounds, the Malvern park by the tennis courts, the marina at Lake Mohawk, the Christmas tree recycling site on Ohio Street in Dellroy, and the Leesville Village Building off state Route 212.

Each of these locations has a "Recycle Your Live Christmas Tree Here" sign, and will be open from Dec. 27 to Jan. 31.

Trees will be chipped, so do not place them in plastic bags or bring plastic trees, wreaths, tinsel or ornaments to the recycling sites.

Environmentally sound uses for Christmas trees are very simple. They can serve as a resting place for birds and animals. It takes more than one tree to make a pile, so ask neighbors or friends to bring their trees to add to the pile.

Another idea is to place trees in ponds or lakes to act as fish habitat. To prevent the trees from floating, attach cinder blocks or similar weights to weigh them down. You can also use Christmas trees to stop erosion washouts or for firewood.

The trees will be chipped by the Carroll County Highway Department at the fairgrounds and mulch will be available for free on a first-come, first-serve basis at the fairgrounds. Watch for information on the availability of mulch in The News Leader, call 330-627-7311 for more information, or see the district's Web site, www.RecyclingMakesSense.org.

Christmas tree mulch is good for increasing acidity in your soil. Pine mulch is excellent for shrubs and trees, but do not use it in flower and vegetable gardens.
