Letter to Editor,

I think you could have heard my screams for miles around when I listened to the news announcer say that our government suggests women not get a mammogram until they are 50 (not at age 40 as the American Cancer Society suggest) and doing self breast exams before the age of 50 is not necessary.

So they want women to ignore a lump in the breast because it most likely is a fibroid or benign tumor. And they are correct that in most cases it is a fibroid or benign tumor, but to ignore it, means if it IS cancer, you just passed up a chance of living a full life. Women can have breast cancer in their 20s.

I found a lump in my breast at the age of 39. According the their guidelines, I should have just ignored it. If I had, I most likely would not have seen my children graduate, attend my 45th year class reunion or been a survivor for 26 years and a volunteer with ACS for 23 years. I think my life was worth a trip to the doctor to check out that lump.

This is just another example, if you let the government in charge of your health care, you better be prepared to die if you get breast cancer before you turn 50.

My question to our government: Will you and your family be subject to the same rules as the rest of us, with YOUR insurance coverage?
