FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
•  Students in the Sandy Valley and Canton Local districts held Veterans Day observances. Michael Tozzi, a senior at Sandy, greeted the veterans who visited  his school. They included Joe Wigfield and Larry Williams. At Faircrest Memorial Middle School, Tony Balsley was one of the students who posed with Capt. Robert E. Hart of Minerva.
•  Kathy Rainsburg, a graduate of Sandy Valley High School, was a member of the homecoming court at Otterbein College. Kathy was an English major,
specializing in medieval literature at the college, near Columbus.
•  Students of the month at East Canton High School were Melissa Swan and Sam Cartwright. Melissa was planning to attend the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and Sam was unsure of what college he would attend, but he wanted to study sports medicine.
10 YEARS AGO
•  Students in the Sandy Valley Local and Canton Local District honored veterans on Veterans Day. James Moffett was shown talking to students at Sandy Valley. Other members of the Isaac L. Kinney American Legion Post were also pictured. At Faircrest, Mike Fisher portrayed Bob Hope as the veterans were entertained. Honored guests at the school included Dr. R.G. Drage and top gun pilot Jim Findlay, both veterans.
•  Area players who were to compete in the Canton South Volleyball Classic were Christina Russell of Canton South, Adriana Mundy of East Canton and Andrea Colton of Sandy Valley. Cleveland Indians mascot Slider was supposed to be a special guest that evening.
•  Top award winners for fall sports at Sandy Valley included: Chris Keck, most valuable player of the football team; Shane Edwards, MVP-boys cross country; Caity Schneider, MVP-girls cross country; Richie Carpino-MVP-boys golf; Andrea Colton-MVP-volleyball. 
25 YEARS AGO
• The results of the election were listed on the front page of The Press-News. Ronald Reagan was elected president, and George Bush was vice president. Ralph Regula was voted in as United States Congressman. Locally a couple of the levies that passed were in East Sparta for roads and bridges and East Canton for general operating.
• Winners of the Halloween costume contest included Tricia Clapper, under 2 years old; Autumn French,  2; Mike Kotema, 3; and Kenny Baker,  4.
• Mike Talkington, 6-4, 260 lb.  tackle for Canton South, was named to the All-Stark County team, along with Don Shimek, 6-3, 203 lb. end for East Canton. MVPs of each area school who also attended the WHBC football banquet at the Crystal Light Restaurant were Jim Hartline of East Canton, Pat Boron of Canton South and Greg Rennie of Sandy Valley.
50 YEARS AGO
• The Sandy Valley Senior Class was presenting a three-act comedy called “Father  Was a Housewife.” The cast included Julie Boyd, David Faulk, Richard DiDente and Helen Baum.
• Two Canton South graduates— John Fortune and Gary Kleptch— were in a play at Kent State University. The play, a Pulitzer Prize winner by Eugene O’Neill, was called “Desire Under the Elms.”
• Seniors at East Canton High School were presenting a three-act comedy called “Down to Earth.” Norma Rothgeb, Duane Dourm, Charles Craig, Linda Morten and Betty Denison were a few of the cast members.
100 YEARS AGO
• For the first time (noticed by our staff), several advertisements were printed on the front page of The Sandy Valley Press. J.E. McCreery— Funeral Director and Embalmer of Magnolia’s ad had the message, “Calls answered from all parts of the country— day or night. Both Phones.”  The Bank of Magnolia’s ad said “no interest paid on deposits.” Other ads were from The Greer-Beatty Clay Company, W. H. Hime-notary public and A.H. Bentz, auctioneer.
• The Magnolia High School Football Team defeated a “strong Mount Union reserve team,” 11-0. The reporter said in the first half, Mount “tore the Tigers line all to pieces,” but failed to score. The first touchdown for the Magnolia Tigers was when a kick went to Red Leichtamer, who carried it 40 yards for a score. Quarterback L. Weis also had a 40-yard run for a TD.
• William Thomas and wife of near Mapleton visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Rice of East Sparta on a Sunday.
