The 71st annual East Sparta Homecoming will be held July 1-3, and fireworks, a parade, rides, food and entertainment will be just a few activities planned during the jam-packed three days.

The eats stand will be open each day at 4 p.m., and will include all the favorites such as homemade chicken and noodles, hamburgers and much more.

A homecoming decorating contest will be held and winners will be announced during the homecoming. Dress up your home in red, white and blue and win one of the top honors. For registration forms, stop at the East Sparta Post Office or McDade's Market.

Of course, the East Sparta citizen/citzens of the year will also be announced during the event.

A car show will be held on Wednesday, July 1, in the evening at the homecoming grounds. Plaques and door prizes will be given.

The parade will be held Friday, July 3. Line-up will be 5:45-6:45 p.m., and the parade steps off at the East Sparta Fire Station on Westbrook at 7 p.m. Awards will be given for the best appearing unit in the following categories: pumper, tanker, rescue truck, ambulance, float, brush truck, senior marching/dance unit, junior marching/ dance unit, antique vehicle and equestrian units. Awards will also be given for chief's choice, longest distance traveled by a fire department, oldest department-owned vehicle in service, oldest antique vehicle and most original entry. In addition, first-, second- and third-place awards will be given for the most patriotic entry.

For more questions about the parade or entry registration, call 330-866-9523.

The Sandy Valley Community Fireworks Display will be held on Thursday, July 2, at 10 p.m. This will be the third annual fireworks display, and the community has been busy raising funds to make it a great show. The fireworks will be shot from the former East Sparta Elementary School Site. Once again, the show will be handled by Abyss Special FX. Anyone interested in making donations, which are needed to continue this event, can do so by stopping by the Bank of Magnolia and ask for your donation to be deposited in the "East Sparta Civic Association's Fireworks Fund."

Contact any civic member, call Linda Muir 330-866-3205 or visit eastsparthomecoming.org for more information about the homecoming. Also, look for stories on the event in upcoming issues of The Press-News.
