Take a walk down memory lane at Pleasant Valley Antiques Etc.November 12, 2008
By DENISE R. FREELAND News Leader Staff Writer As a customer winds his way through Pleasant Valley Antiques Etc. in Minerva, he will likely recognize the Depression glass he remembers from his grandmother's kitchen, the crocheted runner and cherry table from her dining room, and tools from his grandfather's workshop. "It's like a walk down memory lane," said Carole McCully, who, with her husband, Larry, owns the shop. "Everybody says, 'Grandma used to have one of those; Mom used to have one of those." The store, which opened in May, serves as an outlet for a sampling of the many treasures the McCullys have gleaned from auctions and yard sales in 30 years of collecting antiques. "You never pass an auction on the way home," Carole said, summarizing Larry's approach to collecting. Pleasant Valley Antiques Etc. brims with antiques of all types, including furniture, glassware, collectibles, linens, artwork, lights, primitives, quilts, copper items, sleds, clocks, printers' drawers, canning jars, bottles, oil lamps, crocks, and many others. It has in stock a wide variety of glassware, including Depression glassware and pieces from Roseville, Fenton, Hull, R.S. Prussia, Limoges and other makers, as well as china tableware and collectible plates, including a Norman Rockwell set. The selection of furniture changes often and currently includes a cherry drop-leaf table, oak dressers and ladies' secretary, cane-bottom chairs, a variety of rocking chairs, and a solid-wood roll-top desk, offered at $375. "Our prices are good," said Carole, adding that many customers have commented on the shop's low prices. Pleasant Valley Antiques Etc. also has an extensive selection of smaller items, such as books, steins, handkerchiefs, sheet music, and a wide variety of kitchen items and utensils. "It's antiques and etcetera," said Carole. "We have a lot of etcetera." Some unique items currently offered include a blown-glass punchbowl and cups, a carousel horse, and numerous paintings by Minerva artist Jean Calerdine Browne. "We have marvelous gifts for anyone who appreciates old things," said Carole, "things made in the U.S., not in China." Pleasant Valley Antiques Etc. is located at 10061 Blade Road in Minerva and can be reached at 330-868-7826. It is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., or by appointment. Comments
