EAST CANTON -- At the regular meeting of the Osnaburg Local Board of Education on Monday, June 30, two teachers were hired for the 2008-09 school year.

Julie Cogan was hired as a consumer science teacher. She previously taught one year at Newcomerstown. Many of the students may know her because she did her student teaching at East Canton High School. Dawn Vlacovsky was hired as a part-time physical education teacher. She is coming to East Canton from the Northwest school district.

Having met all the requirements of the state of Ohio and East Canton High School, Caroll Skelton was presented with her graduation diploma during the meeting.

East Canton High School principal Chris Corbi congratulated Tom Loy and his coaches on a great track season. At the state track meet, Caitlin Sharp placed fourth in the 3200 race to earn All-Ohio honors. She is the first Osnaburg student to receive that honor in three different sports.

The 3200 relay team placed second to earn All-Ohio honors. That team consisted of James Gibson, Chad Long, Gabe Henning and JB DeRosa. Gabe Henning placed fourth in the 3200 race.

Corbi reported the Ohio Graduation Test has been completed for the summer, and two summer sessions are being offered this year for students that need to make up work. Session I will begin July 2 and session II will begin July 14.

Middle school principal Erica Knowles reported on events at her school. On June 6, eighth-grade students had a community service day. They worked hard on cleanup projects at Werley Park, town hall and the school property, she said. Knowles said that parent turnout was great at the awards assembly on June 9. Postcards will go out in August to notify parents of bus times for the new school year.

Elementary principal Melanie Davis reported the elementary year ended with a wonderful "Fun Day" at Werley Park. This event was sponsored by the PTO. The children played games and had snacks.

Once again "Safetyburg" was offered for students who are entering kindergarten in the fall or have recently finished kindergarten. The event is sponsored by the East Canton Rotary, and 39 children attended during the week of June 16-20. On Friday, a family celebration was hosted in the gym with pizza, beverages and ice cream sandwiches for all children, and families were invited to attend.

During the superintendent's report, Tom Davis said the preliminary test scores are in, and the district did better than they ever have. More details will follow as the results are confirmed.

A new 50-mile radius restriction has been adopted to reduce unnecessary travel, Davis said, as a step to save fuel costs. Field trips and away scrimmages will be discouraged if not within 50 miles.

He said work has began on bleacher repairs in the stadium to conform to Jared's law guidelines.

Osnaburg will offer a preschool program that will be located in Prairie College School. A grant was awarded to cover the cost. He is hoping to fill two classes of 20 children.
