To the editor: East Canton is considering the annexation of the Stark C&D Property. During the meeting on Monday, April 21, the village council approved the first reading of the ordinances to annex the Stark C&D Landfill property and change the zoning to allow for the expansion of the landfill. The property will become an I-1 Industrial District and a Conditional-Use will be added for a construction and demolition debris landfill. Osnaburg Township has worked for over two and a half years to protect the community-- both village and township from the expansion of this landfill. East Canton voted to oppose the landfill expansion in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, the village became part of the ERAC appeal to stop the permit to expand this landfill. Now the village is willing to allow the expansion in order to annex this property and receive some tipping fees and income tax money. This will not be a lot of money. The damage that a large landfill will cause in this community to property values and the health and well-being of our people will be much greater than anything the Village gets from this annexation. The next meeting of the East Canton Village Council will be on Monday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., at the village hall, 130 South Cedar Street. The two annexation and zoning ordinances will be considered for the second time. The village council members are good, dedicated people, but they may not have all the information needed to make the correct decision on this landfill expansion. We need community residents-- village and township-- at the May 5 meeting to show council that we oppose the expansion of this landfill. It is especially important for village residents, but this expansion will damage our entire community. Our new school property is about 1,000 feet to the north of the Landfill property. Please pass the word to as many people as you can. Come to the May 5 meeting and speak out for our community. Donna Middaugh Osnaburg Township Comments
