Snellenberger wins title at Stark County Championships

East Canton's Demetrius Snellenberger won the Division II-III title at the Stark County Cross Country Championships.

The freshman completed the course in 16:33.2, leading the Hornets to a third-place showing.

Kyeem Newell-Owens was 12th in 17:23.9, Tony Cappillo was 18th in 17:59.4, Mason Cain was 38th in 19:22.3, Jake Bellamy was 59th in 20:51.7, and Gabe Jones was 64th in 21:11.1.

"Dee showed why he one of the best in Stark County as he ran another tremendous race," stated Head Coach Lee Sternberg. "Kyeem improves with each race, and his 30th-place finish overall shows he belongs among the best. Tony improved his time from last years race by 46 seconds."

St. Thomas won the small-school race with 37 points. It was followed by Tuslaw with 39, East Canton with 128, Minerva with 144, Canton Central with 154, Marlington with 156, Fairless with 186, Sandy Valley with 208, Alliance with 216, Northwest with 233, Canton South with 262 and Lake Center with 329.

Girls Cross Country

The Lady Hornets were led by Ashlynn Almasy. The senior finished seventh with a time of 29:18.8.

Emily Cain was 31st in 22:04.1, Marie Murphy was 45th in 23:03.1, Abby Reichard was 48th in 23:23, Briana Martino was 52nd in 23:55, Ja'Bria Knight was 54th in 24:14.9, and Victoria Wertz was 62nd in 25:11.4.

St. Thomas won the Division II-III title with 46 points, edging Marlington (48) by two.

Minerva was next with 71, followed by Fairless with 96, Tuslaw with 102, Canton Central with 152, East Canton with 174, Sandy Valley with 195 and Northwest with 272.

The Hornets will compete in the Inter-Valley Conference Championships on Oct. 15.
