Almasy is second, Snellenberger is fourth at Salem Early Bird Cross County meet

Freshman Demetrius Snellenberger had the best time on the day in leading East Canton to a sixth-place showing at the Salem Early Bird Cross Country Meet this past Saturday morning at Waterworth Memorial Park.

Snellenberger finished fourth in the boys race with a time of 17:41.89.

Tony Cappillo was 15th in 18:57.06, Kyeem Newell-Owens was 21st in 19:16.24, Gabe Jones was 83rd in 22:51.75, Jake Bellamy was 90th in 23:29.09, Tom Lorthior was 101st in 24:26.13, and Aaron Heavlin was 110th in 25:58.16.

"After a stellar middle school campaign, Demetrius came into his first high-school cross-country season with high expectations," commented Head Coach Lee Sternberg. "He did not disappoint as finished fourth overall with a good time of 17:41. This is now the eighth fastest time recorded by a freshman at East Canton.Co-captain Tony Cappillo showed off his summer conditioning as he ended up 15th with a time of 18:57."

St. Thomas won the team title with 25 points as all five of its runners placed in the top 10.

Salem was second with 63, followed by Perry with 111, East Liverpool with 135, McKinley with 161, East Canton with 171, Alliance with 192, East Palestine with 223, Canton South with 250, United with 254, Columbiana with 288, Beaver with 317 and Heartland Christian with 394.

Girls Cross Country

Senior Ashlynn Almasy started her senior year with a second-place finish with a time of 20:54.9.

Ja'Bria Knight was 39th in 24:23, Savannah Yacklin was 47th in 24:51, Briana Martino was 51st in 25:04.5, Maria Murphy was 53rd in 25:05, Mary Reichard was 66th in 25:41.5, Victoria Wertz was 68th in 25:46.3, Abby Reichard was 69th in 25:54.1, Autumn Norris was 76th in 26:31.2, Emily Bigler was 106th in 29:05.6, Bria Robinson was 111th in 29:24, Danielle Lebo was 114th in 29:36, Lena Dotson was 118th in 29:53, and Erica Robinson was 123rd in 30:54.3.

Marlington topped all schools with 39 points. It was followed by Austintown Fitch with 102, Perry with 103, Beaver with 109, Boardman with 126, Salem with 145, East Canton with 170, United with 208, McKinley with 246, East Liverpool with 249, Canton South with 285, David Anderson with 349 and Heartland Christian with 362.

The Hornets were to host an invitational on Aug. 31, before taking part in the Tiffin Carnival on Saturday, Sept. 10.
