Woodin duo to lead Lady Cardinals golfers

Sandy Valley's Kerry Riesen is entering his ninth year as the head coach of the girls golf team.

The Lady Cardinals lost three letter winners to graduation from last year's 6-15 squad.

Back are seniors Halley DeOrio, Casey Shortt and Lexi Woodin; junior Bella Woodin; sophomore Dakota Abbott; and freshmen Grace Crilley and Natalie Owens.

Bella Woodin was a second team Inter-Valley Conference and East District a year ago, when she earned her first varsity letter.

Lexi Woodin is a two-year letter winner, and was named to the East District honorable-mention team during her junior campaign.

"We lost three veteran golfers from last season and we have three first-time golfers," commented Coach Riesen. "We need the returning players to take the next step with their game.

"To be competitive, the team needs to improve on every aspect of the game and realize the importance of each shot. The competition will once again be tough in both the IVC and Tri-County South League."

The Lady Cardinals placed 10th at the Tri-County Preseason Tournament at Pleasant View Golf Course.

Lexi Woodin paced the way with a 99. B. Woodin had a 109, Deorio had a 118, Shortt had a 124, and Owens had a 152.

Dover won the overall title with a 376. it was followed by Louisville with a 377, Indian Valley with a 382, Marlington with a 394, Carrollton with a 395, New Philadelphia with a 409, Minerva with a 425, Strasburg with a 439, Alliance with a 446, Claymont with a 450, Sandy Valley with a 450, Canton Central with a 472, Salem with a 485, Ridgewood with a 491, Canton South with a 503, and Fairless with a 578.
