The East Canton High School cross country team competed in its annual 12 hour relay on June 6 at the high school track.
Led by juniors Josh Conrad, Tony Cappillo and Jake Bellamy and sophomore Colt Hemphill, the team ended up with 108 1/4 miles over the 12-hour period. All four ran 13 miles a piece. Conrad had just finished two days before competing in the state track meet, where he was the state runner-up in the 800 in a school record time of 1:55.53.
Other members of the team to finish the relay were freshman Demetrius Snellenberger with 11 miles, Kyeem Newell-Owens with nine miles, Mason Cain and Gabe Jones with seven miles and Aaron Heaviln and Jacob Waters with six miles. Also helping out with the relay with 11 miles was alumnus Chris Lang.
Newell-Ownes also competed at the state track meet and was on the 1,600-meter relay team with Conrad, James McCullough and Zach McClaskey that finished as the state runner-up in a school record.
Many "guess milers" also ran in the relay. The relay is used as a fundraiser for the team and will help defray the cost of much needed equipment and their cross country camp.
