Hornets drop two games to end regular season

The East Canton Hornets dropped contests to Tuslaw and Mogadore in their final two regular season games last week.

The Hornets lost to the Mustangs on senior night, 55-38, and at state-ranked Mogadore, 72-54, on Friday. Seniors Cody Reichard and Alec Pennell turned in an epic three-point shooting performance in Friday's game.

The Tuslaw game started well and was tied 8-8 after one stanza. From there the Division II Mustangs took control but in a less-than-convincing fashion. They controlled quarter two 18-9 but won three 15-10 and the final 14-11.

Hayden Miller led the Hornets with 15 points and Pennell scored 11. Miller hit four-of-11 treys and Pennell two-of-seven. Both Drew Heitger and Bryce Moldovan collected eight rebounds, and Clay Libertore added seven. Reichard dished out seven assists.

The game at Mogadore was a game of two halves. A lethargic starting unit saw little time early and the Hornets fell behind 50-15 at halftime. Revived, they came back to outscore the host Wildcats 49-22 in the second half.

Reichard and Pennell combined to hit 12-of-28 treys. Reichard went off for seven and finished with a career-high 29 points. Pennell hit five for 15 markers. Libertore paced the rebounding effort with nine and Reichard added six to go with five assists. Moldovan and Heitger had five rebounds each.

Coach Chad Pado commented on the two games: "Tuslaw is a good team and the big kid down low was a handful for us.  We were pleased with our effort and execution tonight.  We really needed to take advantage of some opportunities early in the game.  We missed two or three lay-ups early and were 0-4 or 5 from the line in the first quarter.  We needed to take advantage of some of those opportunities to have a chance to beat a good D2 school like Tuslaw.

"Mogadore is 18-4 for a reason and they played like they were 22-0 tonight.  If they shoot the ball like they did tonight they will be a tough out in the tournament.  We got our heads right and really played a nice second half which hopefully will springboard us into a tournament win Monday night."
