The Sandy Valley Cardinal wrestling squad took a journey on Thursday night to Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School to participate in a triangular meet with the Saints and the Garaway Pirates.
All the Cardinals did was dominate and leave TCC with a 51-19 win over the Garaway Pirates and a 78-3 victory over the TCC Saints to prove to the IVC they are the team to beat.
Posting victories in the Garway match were Hunter Vanderpool (106 pound, pin in 1:00), Brandon Carbenina (113 pound, forfeit), Evan Offenberger (120 pound, pin in 1:53), Joe Newman (126 pound, pin in 1:01), Avery Elifritz (152 pound, decision win 13-9), Brett Stoffer (160 pound, pin in 4:32), Hudson Cole (170 pound, pin in 1:20), Sam Groff (182 pound, pin in 3:07) and Dakota Bryan (195 pound, pin in :18).
Sandy Valley and Tusky Central Catholic ended the night and it was all SV in this one.
A shorthanded TCC squad gave the Cards eleven forfeits (Vanderpool, Carbenia, Offenberger, Billy Kesling, Jaret Oliver, Stoffer, Cole, Groff, Bryan, Nick Smith and Jake Geiger) which put Sandy Valley up 66-0 before the wrestling really even got started.
Posting wins for the Cards were Newman, who pinned his opponent in 2:23 and Eric Cassidy (132 pound), who secured a pin in 2:28.
The wrestling squad runs their dual record to 14-5 on the season and returned to action on Jan. 23 when they participated in the inagural OHSAA state dual meet. The Cards were set to meet the winner of the Loudonville and Orville match. The winner of that dual moved onto the regional semifinals that will take place on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. The Cardinals are the two-seed in their region with Waynedale taking the top seed.
The wrestlers will participate in the St. Mary's Invitational this weekend. Wrestling will begin at 2 p.m. on Jan. 25 and 10 a.m. on Jan. 26.
