The Sandy Valley matmen began 2013 on a solid note when they traveled to the Shadyside Invitational on Jan. 5. In a 17 team field, the Cardinals finished third overall thanks to a great team effort and eight wrestlers who placed in the invitational.
In the team category, Northwestern took the team title outlasting both Cincinnati Moeller's B squad and Sandy Valley.
Leading the way for the Cards in the Invite were two individuals who have carried the load this season for the team and they are Joe Newman and Sam Groff. Newman ran his overall record on the year to 23-2 while also taking home first place honors in the 120 pound weight class. Groff ran his overall record to an unblemished 24-0 as he took home the title in the 195 pound weight class.
Taking home second place honors were Brandon Carbenia (113 pound) and Evan Offenberger (126 pound).
Also placing for the Cardinals were Nick Smith (220 pound) and Dakota Bryan (195 pound) who each took home third place finishes while teammates Eric Cassidy (132 pound) and Hudson Cole (182 pound) each finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
The boys returned to the mats on Jan. 9 when they traveled to Northwestern High School to take on the Shadyside Invite champions in a dual. The wrestlers will then travel to Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School on Thursday, Jan. 17 to compete in an IVC triangular meet with TCC and fellow IVC favorite, Garaway. The triangular is set to begin at 6 p.m.
