Sandy Valley matmen take care of Timken, Malvern

The Sandy Valley wrestlers were back on the mats on Dec. 19 when they loaded the bus and traveled to Timken High School to compete in a triangular meet with the Trojans and the Malvern Hornets.

In the first of two matches, the Cards took on IVC rival Malvern. Sandy Valley controlled the contest and dumped the Hornets by the final count of 60-21.

Landing wins for the Cardinals were Tommy Sancic (106) by forfeit, Joey Newman (126) by pin (2:34), Eric Cassidy (123) by pin (1:36), Billy Kesling (145) by pin (1:43) Jaret Oliver (152) by pin (:39), Avery Elifritz (160) by forfeit, Quinton Weber (170) by forfeit, Sam Groff (195) by pin (2:24), Nick Smith (220) by forfeit and Jake Geiger (285) by forfeit.

The wrestlers were back on the mats later that night when they narrowly defeated the host Trojans by the final count of 38-33. Sancic (113) wrestled the last match of the evening and secured the win for the Cardinals by a decision count of 16-10.

Also recording victories for the Cardinals were Newman (126) by pin (2:27), Cassidy (132) by forfeit, Colin Hughes (138) by forfeit, Brett Stoffer (170) by pin (:57), Groff (195) by forfeit and Smith (220) by pin (2:37).

The two wins run Sandy Valley's dual record for the season to 9-5. Following the Christmas holiday, the Cardinal wrestlers will be back on the mats when they travel to Indian Valley for a triangular match with Indian Valley and Milan Edison on Thursday, Dec. 27. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. They will then travel to Shadyside High School on Jan. 5 to participate in the Shadyside Invitational. Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m.
