In a week that saw the Canton South girls basketball team on the hardwood twice, the girls came out victorious in both occurrences by downing Claymont on Dec. 5 and NBC opponent Salem on Dec. 8.
"Our defense is what will win and keep us in games," said South head coach Jamey McKenzie II. "Our primary focus is man to man but through our scouting of both teams, we felt changing defenses would help us as they did."
The ladies traveled to Claymont High School and came out blazing as the Wildcats raced out to a 13-1 lead after one quarter of play. The Cats kept their double digit lead through the second quarter and led 24-13 at the intermission.
The third quarter saw the Cats really blow it open, out scoring Claymont 14-5 in the period to increase their lead to 38-18 entering the fourth and final quarter. In the fourth, it was all the same as the Cats cruised to a 55-24 victory over Claymont to get their first win of the season.
Leading the way for the Cats was Hunter Harris with 15 points. Also filling the stat sheet was Morgan Jeter with 12 points and five rebounds, Katie Uminski with nine points, Livi Forshey added five points and Caroline Thompson added five as well.
The Cats were out rebounded by Claymont by the tally of 26-22.
"I can't say enough how this was a true team effort in this win," commented McKenzie II on the win.
On Saturday, the Cats continued NBC play when the Salem Quakers came to town. In a very physical contest, the Wildcats came out on top by the final score of 38-25.
South once again got off to a fast start, leading 10-2 after quarter one. Canton South gave a little bit of that lead away in the second quarter as the Quakers out scored the Cats 7-4 in the second stanza and trailed South 14-9 at the break.
In the third quarter, both teams sank 10 points through the nets as the Cats maintained their five point lead at 24-19 entering the fourth and final quarter.
It was all Canton South.
South dominated the quarter with offense and defense and blew the game open in the final eight minutes to seal the deal and get their first NBC victory on the season.
Leading the way for the Cats was Harris with 10 points. Joelle Martin added nine, Jeter added eight, Uminski tacked on seven and Thompsn chipped in with three in a balanced scoring effort for the red and grey.
"This week was a tremendous showing of our defense. We played every defense you can think of from full court traps, to half court traps, to man defense and various zones. Our girls executed our defensive game plan as we wanted," said McKenzie II on his defense. "When we play defense like we did this week, I will put us up against almost anyone."
The girls (2-3, 1-1) returned to the hardwood on Dec. 12 when they traveled to take on the Tigers of Massillon. The Cats will then travel to Carrollton to take on the Warriors on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
