By MIKE Mundy The Press-News Published:

"The girls have been working hard during the preseason, so it's nice to have them get the reward of their first win at home. Every girl on the team contributed in a positive way during the game."

Those were the words of coach Jennifer Martinez as the East Canton Wizards opened their season with a dominating 46-26 win over visiting Canton Heritage Christian on Saturday night. They used a 23-11 first half lead to pave the way to a win. They finished it off with a 15-2 final stanza.

Sharing scoring honors for the Wizards were senior Brianna Payne and sophomore Megan Gothard with eight points each. Payne's effort included a pair of treys. Gothard had a four-of-four effort from the free throw line.

Also assisting for East Canton was Alexis Wellendorf with six points; Hannah Butler and Kaitlyn McCullough with five each; Kelsea McCullough with four; and Amirra Hmidan, Abigail Cook and Brooke Solomon with two points each.

The girls have two away games coming up. They travel to Tusky Valley on Nov. 28 and to Lake Center Christian on Saturday.
