Canton South Wrestling coach Skip Laughlin and the 2012-2013 Wildcats are ready to get after it this season as they bring back ten wrestlers, including seven starters from a squad that went 10-5 last season and 3-4 in the NBC.
"We have a quality group of young wrestlers that we are counting on to step up during the season," says Laughlin on his team. The long tenured head coach enters the season with a career record of 306-125-4.
Leading the list of returnees are seniors Walker Catlett (120lb, Honorable Mention NBC, 2nd Team All-Stark County and District Qualifier), Zaire Daniels (285lb), Jamey Herron (145lb), Gust Malavite (160lb), Dennis Parsons (215), D.J. Schoeppner (113lb, 1st Team All-NBC, 1st Team All-Stark County, District and State Qualifier and finished 8th in state meet), and Sam Simmons.
Headlining the junior returnees are Chris Stewart (195lb) and Dylan Dolph (132lb, District Qualifier), followed by sophomore Sam Johnson (106lb).
"We will be young team who we hope all will develop throughout the season and we hope to continue our postseason success of sending seven wrestlers to state the past three years," commented Laughlin on the tradition of the Wildcat wrestling squad.
The Wildcats will once again take on the daunting task of wrestling in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference, but coach Laughlin thinks his kids are going to be up for the challenge in 2012-2013.
"We expect to be competitive again," he said when asked about the NBC.
"We have a good core of experienced wrestlers who have a great work ethic," Laughlin added on his team.
The Wildcats are set to hit the mats and begin their season this Saturday when they host the Wildcat Duals. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. The boys will then host Marlington on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. before hosting Alliance on Dec 13 at 7:30 p.m. Their first road trip is not until Dec. 14 when they travel to Hoover High School to participate in the 53rd annual Holiday Tournament. All home matches for the Wildcats are at Faircrest Middle School.
Laughlin will be assisted this season by Jim Laughlin, Bill Hall, Carl Busnick, John Pye and Adam Hurless.
