PERRY TWP. -- Canton South and Perry rekindled an old football rivalry last week.

The Panthers took the better end of the season opener as they won 44-13. It was the two schools first meeting since 1986.

Perry received the opening kickoff and went 80 yards in six minutes and ten seconds for a 7-0 lead.

South answered right back with a touchdown on its first drive of the game. Senior quarterback Jared May anchored South's spread offense mostly through the air.

With 1:50 to play in the opening quarter, May found senior receiver Justin Lynch in the endzone from six yards out. Troy Sheridan's extra point attempt was blocked as South trailed 7-6.

The touchdown pass was set up with a 30-yard reception by Lynch, three catches from Sheridan and a reception by James Lucas.

From then on, Perry had its way with a balanced offensive attack. The Panthers' physical play in the trenches opened several big holes for running back Jon Miller. They also found receivers in the middle of the field against the Wildcats' 3-5 defense.

South' s passing game had success for most of the chilly night in Perry. May constantly found receivers open on short, quick passes or on slant routes. He finished the game going 19-43 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Lucas led South's receiving corps with seven catches for 76 yards.

South's other touchdown in the game came late in the fourth quarter, again on a connection from May to Lynch. With 31 seconds to play in the game, May connected with Lynch from five yards out.

The Wildcats will play their first home game of the season when they host Canfield on Friday.
