COLUMBUS-- Canton South's Joey Morris led all area wrestlers this past weekend with a fifth-place finish at the state wrestling championships held in Columbus.
Morris's first match was given to Calvin Campbell of Lexington, who later finished the tournament as the runner up. Morris then moved on to win three in a row to lock in a place. He later dropped a close fought 5-3 match to Luke Langdon of Claymont, who went on finished in fourth- place overall.
His final opponent was Andrew Bertubin, a state runner-up in 2009. Morris threw down a nail-biting 3-1, overtime win in his final match to place fifth overall.
Coach Skip Laughlin added, "Bertubin entered the tournament the projected champion (for this year)."
"I thought Joey wrestled great this weekend. His losses were to quality individuals and in close matches. When he won he was at his best." Laughlin continued, "I have been coaching Joey for the last five years in some capacity and this was the weekend we knew he had in him. He is the type of athlete that will use this experience to push himself to a whole different level."
Coach comments on his other Wildcats, "From a program standpoint we have been working toward this for the last four years. We think it will be a great motivator for the rest of our wrestlers."
Joey finished this season with a 37-5 record. He was also named this year's NBC MVP.
