Joey Morris was the lone Wildcat to qualify to the state tournament this year as he finished in third place at the Akron Firestone district tournament.

Morris entered his 112 lb. weight class bracket strong with two wins. He then lost to Mike November of West Geauga in a 4-2 decision. Morris quickly fought back with a pin over David Coates of Lake Catholic to secure his spot in the state tournament. He won his final match 6-2 over Dustin Graham of West Branch to place 3rd overall.

The Wildcats finished in 20th place as a team.

Coach Skip Laughlin rawell done.

He comments, "We took nine wrestlers, four got within one or two matches of qualifying. Joey wrestled extremely well and we think he is peaking at exactly the right time."

STATE

The last time South sent a wrestler to Columbus was in 2004 with Phil Natale. It was in 2002, when the school last had someone on the podium when Jimmy Laughlin and Justin Busnick both placed at the state level.

Morris will first face Calvin Campbell of Lexington on Thursday (tonight) in round one of the State Tournament.
