The Sandy Valley girls basketball team ended their season on a positive note by defeating Newcomerstown in a make up game, by the score of 71-59 on Monday, Feb. 22.
Sandy Valley jumped ahead early, leading 16-9 after one period. The Lady Cardinals took a 33-24 lead into the half. They were still ahead going into the final eight minutes, 48-39. Both teams had their best period in the final eight minutes. Sandy Valley scored 23 points to Newcomerstown's 20.
The Lady Cards shot 49 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the line. Danielle Groom's 17 points made her the leading scorer for Sandy Valley. Jordan Fonte and Carli Nicholson added 15 and 13, respectively.
Sandy Valley had 32 rebounds, 12 turnovers and committed 15 fouls. Fonte had an impressive 13 rebounds for the night.
The Lady Cardinals end the season at 10-11 overall and 8-8 in league play.
The junior varsity lost a close game by the score of 33-32.
