Eight Press-News area football players were recognized as all-state players this past week. Canton South's Jerald Robinson, Mike McKinney, Matt Trissel and Ryan Jialanella, East Canton's Josh VanVoorhis, Andrew Bargides and Caleb Schmuker and Sandy Valley's Zach Mozden all received the honor.
Robinson and McKinney were first team picks in Division III. Robinson led South in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns this year and was second in receptions. The junior standout caught 34 passes for 756 yards and seven touchdowns. Five of his seven touchdown catches were 20 yards or longer, including an 86-yarder and a 56-yarder.
McKinney led the Wildcats in tackles with 102 and had five sacks, nine tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.
McKinney was a second team all-state choice in 2007.
Robinson was selected as a wide receiver and McKinney as a linebacker.
VanVoorhis was a first team pick in Division VI. VanVoorhis was named the Northeast Inland District Defensive Player of the Year this season. He was also a first team all-conference and all-district choice.
VanVoorhis was selected as a defensive back.
Trissel was a second team choice in Division III. He finished the season with a career-high 1,878 yards on 128-of-246 passing and had 16 touchdowns. He also rushed for 438 yards and six scores on 106 carries.
Jialanella was a special mention choice in Division III, Bargides and Schmuker were special mention picks in Division VI and Mozden was a special mention choice in Division IV.
All eight were named to The Press-News All-Star team this year; Trissel as quarterback, Robinson and Mozden as wide receivers, Bargides as an offensive lineman, McKinney as a linebacker, Jialanella as a defensive lineman, VanVoorhis as a defensive back and Schmuker as a defensive athlete.
