During language arts class, students in Tom Shaheen's second-grade classroom at Walker Elementary read a story called "The Ugly Vegetables." The main characters in the story make soup for their neighbors.

As a culmination activity, the seconds graders each brought a vegetable to contribute to a pot of soup. To go along with the soup they made bread.

The bread lesson had the students working on science theory and the science of bread making. They all shared the responsibility of preparing the dough, and each student had the opportunity to do some of the kneading and forming of a roll.

Both lessons addressed math concepts that everyone uses in their everyday lives.
