A regular meeting of the board of education was held in the Sandy Valley High/Middle School library during which the board approved a resolution to proceed with the renewal of the permanent improvement tax, which will be on the November ballot.

The board also discussed forming a levy committee to help get the word out to voters in the area what the renewal is and why it is needed.

It was also announced that the meeting was being held in the library to accommodate the dedication ceremony of the memory tree, which was created in front of the school. Art teacher Judi DiSabato and her former student David McDowell were recognized for their efforts in constructing the tree and leading a group of students, teachers and volunteer help to accomplish the dream of building a stained-glass tree that would remember the former hometown schools. The ceremony was held after the meeting. (See more information and photos in next week's issue of the Press-News and on the Web site).

In personnel matters, during the meeting, two positions were reduced due to financial and curriculum changes for the 2010-11 school year. Barry Busse, middle school/high school music teacher, and James Feicht, social worker, did not have their contract renewed. According to superintendent David Janofa, Laura Dotson and Melissa Humphrey, both of whom had more seniority, will probably help out with vocal music, while band director Jeff Huston will pick up a guitar class that had been taught by Busse. Feicht's responsibilities will also be shared with other staff members.

In other business, the board:

* ACCEPTED the resignations of Heather Covert and Elizabeth Spaulding;

* ISSUED a one-year, limited contract to the following: Justin Baum, fifth-grade teacher; Natalie Lindamood, elementary tutor, Derek Veransky, middle school tutor; William Graham, E-learning coordinator;

* ISSUED a continuing contract to Christine Glasgo, district school nurse;

* ADJUSTED a one-year contract to a two-year, limited contract for Natalie Eyler;

* HEARD the second reading and approved a semi-annual board policy on statutory compliance;

* APPROVED the elementary and middle/high school student handbook for 2010-11 school year;

* RECOMMENDED supporting Pike Township Historical Society in the application process for a grant from the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums;

* APPROVED several reports.

The next regular meeting of the board of education will be held Aug. 9, 6 p.m., in the board meeting room.
