Pike Historical Society has 'Civil War Moment'

Pike Historical Society met on Jan. 7, for their first meeting of 2013. President Kay Weisen conducted the meeting.

The Civil War Moment was given by Weisen, who told about Elizabeth Van Lew, nicknamed Crazy Betsy. She was spy during the Civil War, and was appointed post mistress of Richmond from 1869-77.

It was reported the society sign in front of the log cabin was knocked down sometime early December, and members are checking on having a new one built. Lumber has also been ordered for the floors. The annual Log Cabin Day will be June 15, and entertainers and crafters are being sought for the event. Pulled pork will again be one of the menu items this year.

The society members are also hoping to have a display case put in Sweetea's Restaurant to show some of the group's memorabilia. The society has been given a showcase from Barrick's Drug Store in East Sparta.

A booth is also planned at the East Sparta Homecoming and Sandy & Beaver Canal Days in Magnolia.

Yearly donations are due anytime. They are $15 for a family and $10 for individuals. Send the donations to Charlene Stelluto.

Next meeting will be Feb, 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the East Sparta Community Building.
