Light of Christ Church in Waynesburg is offering free breakfast items throughout the summer for children eligible for the school free lunch programs. This outreach is meant to be a summer supplement to other quality year-round food distribution programs and is called "Pack your backpack with breakfast."
About 35 children have been stopping in at the Waynesburg American Legion building, on Tuesdays from 9-10:30 a.m. to receive cereal, pop tarts, bread, peanut butter, jelly, string cheese, juice boxes and fruit cups. Youngster are encouraged to bring their back packs so that they can carry their breakfast foods home each week.
Donna Dudash is the head of this project and thinks it is no coincidence that her church was praying about a way to reach out to their community when she had an interesting conversation with her son. He is a school principal in another district and expressed concern about the large number of his students that receive free lunches because the state of the economy. He knew it wold be a struggle for those parents to provide nutritional meals thorough the summer. With that thought the backpack breakfast ministry was born.
The church members are very thankful to the American Legion for the use of their building and to Thrivent for Lutherans of Stark County and Tuscarawas County for helping to fund this program. Individuals and local food vendors have also made generous contributions to the success of this venture.
Light of Christ Church members, led by their pastor, Nick Abraham, meet at the Cross-eyed Mission meeting room in Waynesburg. For more information about this program or the church, call Ed Jesse at 330-323-4562.
