Lowell Dean Oberly, who graduated in 1939 from Osnaburg Township High School, now known as East Canton High School, will always be remembered for being a war hero, who gave all. The Lowell D. Oberly Post 667 of the American Legion was named in his honor. He was the first known graduate of Osnaburg Schools to lose his life while fighting for his country in World War II. Before entering the service, Oberly played football and baseball for the school. On May 24, 1943 he was commissioned into the U. S. Air Force. When stationed in North Africa he flew secret missions over Greece, Australia, Germany, France and Italy. He was named first pilot and squadron leader in the 97th Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force. He piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was later moved to Italy. His plane was shot down on his 47th mission.
