Graduating from Kent State University is a tradition in Margaret Hartmann's family. A 1936 East Canton High School graduate, Hartmann received her teaching diploma from Kent in 1938. In 1955 she received her bachelor's degree in education from the same school. At that time she did not realize her grandchildren and great-grandchildren would follow in her footsteps.
On May 14, Margaret watched two great-granddaughters, Nicole Parker and Darla Topp, walk across the stage to receive their diplomas from the Stark Campus of Kent State University,
Both girls are graduates of East Canton High School and graduated Summa Cum Laude from KSU.
Parker earned a bachelor of science degree in middle childhood education, and Topp received a bachelor of science degree in integrated health science. Topp plans to pursue a doctorate degree in physical therapy from Walsh University.
Other family members observing this family tradition include granddaughters Cherie (Clapper) Mountain and Debie (Clapper) Davidson. Both are 1989 graduates of East Canton High School and went on to earn degrees from Kent. Mountain is a clinical manager at Akron Summa Hospital and a nursing instructor. Davidson is a fourth-grade teacher at Walker Elementary School in Canton Local, the same school district where Margaret was a teacher.
Margaret has three other great-grandchildren who are East Canton High School graduates and are attending Kent State. They are Joshua Clapper, majoring in education; Crystal Parker, majoring in business; and Diane Topp, majoring in chemistry pre-pharmacy.
