Benefit dinner to be held
Philip Cordes, a 2006 Sandy Valley graduate, is set to leave for Durban, South Africa in August.
As a recent graduate in political science and Biblical studies from Malone University, his passion for understanding the world and the formative impact of his faith within it lead him to seek this unique opportunity.
From the end of August through the end of next July, Cordes will be participating in a service program through the Mennonite Central Committee called Service and Learning Together. The SALT program is designed to challenge young adults through different service placements throughout the world for a year-long cross cultural immersion experience.
Cordes will spend his time living with a South African family and serving at a Refugee Social Service agency operated by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. The Refugee Social Service agency is tasked with assisting the most vulnerable members of the refugee community with various services that will assist them with their integration into South African society. Cordes will work as an advocate on behalf of the client community to enhance services and promote integration by working with government departments, doing status determinations and providing community development activities.
Cordes is requesting the support of his community to help him take advantage of this opportunity. In order to raise the funds that he needs for his year of service, there will be a benefit dinner at East Sparta Christian Church from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 16. If you would like to come support and learn more about what Cordes will be doing, please RSVP by e-mailing SouthAfricaPhil@gmail.com or by calling 330-866-2368.
