* Jan. 16 was National Nothing Day which was originated in 1973 by the late Harold Pullman Coffin, a newspaperman who enjoyed spoofing all the other official days, weeks and months that fill the calendar.

* Anniversaries this week are beimg celebrated by Matt and Lisa Hollinger.

* The Jolly Eights Card Club met on Jan. 13 at Southside Grinderz. Lil Heilman was hostess. Prizes were won by Barb Harding, Helen Trompower, Jeannie Thouvenin and Ginny Norris, February 10th at Southside Grinderz. The hostess will be Martha Pattison.

* Lee Horrisberger and Donna Thouvenin spent a day in Lancaster and a day in Hocking Hills hiking. They went to the glass museum in Lancaster which was one of the biggest glass making places in the world at one time. They also visited their friends, Mary Lou and Ray Trax.

* The Stark County Safety Council met on Jan.14. Speakers were detective Bryan Allen and sergeant Doug Zartman from the Detective Bureau of the Canton Police Department. They spoke about "assisting law enforcement in matters of personal security, abduction, assult, etc." The Feb. 11 meeting will feature Tim Bauserman from Southern Consulting. The topic will be "Crucial Confrontations Training: Learn Skills of How to Effectively Hold Each Other Accountable to Safety Expectations." On Jan. 21, the Stark County Council and Stark County Local Emergency Planning Committee will present a seminar on asbestos awareness.

* Congratulations to Missy and Gary M. Trompower on the birth of their new daughter, Dakota Marie who was born on Jan. 8th. She weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and was 18 inches long. She joins her big brother, Gary Nichols. Maternal grandparents are Charles and Linda Haiduc and paternal grandparents are Gary L. and Cindy Trompower of the Canton South area.

* The Foltz Community Center membership drive is underway. Stop in the office and sign up, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Individual adult

memberships are $25, sustaining sponsor memberships are $100 and endowment sponsorships are $1,000.

* Hope you are making plans to join your friends at the East Canton Rotary Chili Cook-Off, set for Friday, Feb. 5, from 4-7:30 p.m., at the Foltz Center. The event will be held in the Brunner-Bland and Kroft Rooms. Two categories of chili will be tasted and judged-- mild and spicy. The winner will receive $50 and best overall will compete for $100. In addition to the chili, cornbread, refreshments and cookies will be served and two 50/50 drawings will be held-- one at 5 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.

* Senior Flex is off to a good start in 2010, with 44 members in attendance. Seniors work out with stretch bands, weights and floor mats. For those who cannot get down

on the floor, chair exercising is available. Extra bands, weights and mats are also available until you can get your own. Come on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9-10 a.m. For more informaiton, call 330-488-6500.

* Bill Shearer of Lakewood, Colo., traveled to Ohio, via plane, where he spent Dec. 16 through Jan. 6 with his mother, Frances Shearer. Bill also visited many other relatives and friends in the area during his stay.

* I spent the holidays (Dec. 24 through Jan. 4) in Coshocton, with my son, Denny, and his wife Peggy. Additional guests on Christmas Day for a buffet ham dinner and gift exchange were Denny and Peggy's son Chris, with wife Shiloh Willis, and their daughter Alicia, all of Howard; their daughter, Angie, with husband Tommy Babcock, and their daughter Shelby and son Talon, of Conesville; their grandson, Justin, with wife Kristina Willis of Mt. Vernon; and in the afternoon, a close friend of the family, Forest Darr of Coshocton.

On Dec. 28, I became a great-great grandmother when my great grandson, Justin, and his wife, Kristina, became the parents of a daughter, Kylie Jean. Kylie weighed 6 pounds and 9 ounces, and was 20 inches long. She was born at the Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

On Jan. 2, I accompanied my son and daughter-in-law to Howard, where we visited with Chris and family, prior to everyone driving to Mt. Vernon to see the Park Manor Apartment, which is home of Justin and Kristina and their "new" arrival.

* The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Fraternal Home Builders took place on Jan. 2, at the Robertsville Grange Hall. Seventeen were present. The purpose of the yearly meeting is to elect officers and other necessary business which was conducted by president Harold Schweitzer. The secretary and treasurer reports were read by Bill Walter and Darlene Drage, respectively.

Present officers were retained as follows: Harold Schweitzer, president; Dick Lotze, vice president; Bill Walter, secretary; Darlene Drage, treasurer; and Carl Anthony, Gottfried Lehmann, Dave Morrison, and Lillian Munk as directors.
