• The Jolly Eight’s Card Club met on Nov. 11 at Southside Grinderz. Elaine Lower served as the hostess. Prizes were won by Ginny Norris, who was welcomed into the group today by Eileen Lower, Martha Pattison and Lois Bowman. The Dec. 9 meeting will be hosted by Lois Bowman at Southside Grinderz.
• The Stark County Safety Council met on Nov. 12 at Meyers Lake Ballroom. The program was presented by attorney Curt Werren of Day Ketterer, Ltd., attorneys at law. His topic was Employee Handbook Checkup—Modernizing To Keep Pace with 21st Century Technology and Concerns. The Dec. 10 gathering will be the final council luncheon for the year. The program will be the Council Year End Review hosted by the SCSC Steering Committee.
• Nov. 20 marks Universal Children’s Day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. Nov. 22 is an occasion for special concerts and activities by musical organizations. St. Cecilia, a Christian martyr in third century Rome, is the traditional patron of music and musicians. Nov. 23-29 is National Family Week and has been designated by Presidential Proclamation since 1972 to set aside the Thanksgiving week each year to encourage family members to care for and respect one another.
• Canton South AARP 4885 Board Meeting was held on Nov. 12 in the fellowship hall of North Industry Christian Church. The general membership meeting of the organization will be held on Nov. 18 at noon with a luncheon, followed by the meeting and program. Greeters for the November meeting are Dick and Barbara Freday. Seventy-two reservations for lunch have been made. Dues of $3 for 2010 are due to membership chairman Linda Jones by Dec. 3. Election of officers for the 2010 year will be held. The tour group will be going to “A Country Christmas in Nashville” Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.
• Get ready for the 34th annual Canton South Junior Guild Breakfast with Santa and Craft show on Dec. 5-6 at Faircrest Middle School. It’s not too late to reserve your table. You can do this by contacting chairman Yvonne Schaefer at 330-488-2193.

• Where can you enjoy listening to some of the best singers in the Community? Come to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. and hear a Singspiration for Little Sandy Creek Ruritans. A love offering will be taken and refreshments to follow. The Ruritans help families who need medical equipment and your donations will help acquire those needed items.
• Church Cookbooks are the best. “Food for the Soul” Cookbook is being offered for sale for $10 and they will mail it for you for $12.50. Stop at the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church or call 330-488-1842. They make great Christmas gifts.
• Get a jump start with an exercise program before the new year. Senior Flex is open to all seniors, and it is held at Foltz Community Center every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-10 a.m. The second Wednesday of each month exercise classes are not held due to this senior social luncheon.

• Minerva High School senior Mike T. Wilson has earned his Eagle Scout Award. Mike is a member of the Malvern Eagle Scout Troop 155. To earn his award, Mike spent many hours working at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, building book shelving for the pastor’s office by recycling material left over from the old office. Mike also repaired the ceiling, painted doors and delivered over 1,000 books for recycling. Mike will receive his Eagle Scout Award at his Court of Honor on Nov. 28. Mike will graduate this spring and plans to attend college, and he would like to teach and coach. Congratulations, Mike.
• Hey kids, Santa is going to be at the Foltz Center for the annual Children’s Christmas Party, on Sunday, Dec. 6, from 2-4 p.m., for children 12 and under. Registration deadline is Thursday, Dec. 3. In the spirit of giving, children are encouraged to bring coloring books, crayons, puzzle books, colored pencils, markers or sets of paints, which will be donated to Jayani’s Treasure Chest at Aultman Hospital. Parents must accompany their children to the party. Registration forms may be picked up at the Foltz Center and the children will receive a form from school to bring home. Don’t forget your cameras.
• Bring your family, friends and neighbors and share a fish dinner (fried or baked) or chicken dinner at the Foltz Community Center on Nov. 20 from 4:30-7 p.m. The cost is $7.50 adult $4 child. Drinks and desserts are also available. Following the dinner stay and take part in the country-western line dancing from 8-11 p.m.
• The Monday night line-dancing classes at the Foltz Community Center have been canceled for the month of December. Cathy Kaufman will see you in January, 2010.
• Osnaburg Historical Society to hold its annual Christmas dinner at the Werner Inn on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m. Choices of entrees will be chicken or Swiss steak. Reservation deadline is Dec.4, and the public is invited. Call 330-488-0110 or 330-488-0353.
• Rumor has it that Santa Claus will pay a visit to the Werner Inn on Sunday Dec. 13, from 1:30-4 p.m., and he’s bringing gifts for all the children. Refreshments will be served.

On Thursday, Dec. 3, many local girls will perform on the main stage at “Light Up Downtown Canton.” These girls are members of the Canton Elite Baton Corps, under the direction of Karla Neff. Several local high school show choirs will also perform at various places around the main square, and the evening will close with fireworks. “Light Up Downtown Canton” is a fun event for all ages and a great way to support our local youth.

This weekend, my parents, Glenn and Pat Ellington, celebrated 57 years of marriage with a rededication of their vows. The celebration took place at The Amish Door, and all six of their children and spouses attended along with several other family members. Grandson, Matt Ellington, officiated the ceremony. Congratulations, Mom and Dad!
Thank you, Mr. Jeff Huston and the Sandy Valley Marching Band for a wonderful and entertaining football season. Also, thank you to all the parents and band boosters who provide the support of the band program. You all put in lots of hard work, and it shows!
