To the editor:
It was very nice to read "good news" in the paper as we all know that "good news" doesn't sell papers. The "good news" that I am referring to is the articles concerning Service to Others that was held Sept. 17. It is great that different businesses had their employees out doing a form of volunteer community service on this designated day.
I am writing to let your readership know that there is an organization out there that community service is its main purpose. So much so that its motto is, "We Serve." I am talking about The Lions Clubs of Ohio. Their service is year round, not on one special designated day. There are 58 clubs in the five county District of Ohio Lions 13D (Stark, Portage, Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana) that do community service by delivering Meals on Wheels, building wheelchair ramps, helping at various foodbanks and nursing homes, just to name a few.
The main focus of the Lions clubs is in the prevention of blindness through preschool eye screenings, recycling eyeglasses for third world countries, diabetes testing, glaucoma testing, providing eyeglasses for those who cannot afford them, sponsoring pilot dogs and the financial support of eye research.
If you are serious about performing service to others on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis, contact your local Lions club. You probably won't get the publicity that this past Thursday's designated day received, but you will get a great feeling in your heart for making your community a better place. Lions are "Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things!"
