Oltie and Mary (Maples) Pickens of Magnolia celebrated their wedding anniversary of 60 years on Aug. 11 at their home.

Mary and Oltie met via an apartment living. Oltie was living in the adjacent building and Mary would watch from her window as Oltie would cook. On their first date, Oltie showed up in a turtle neck shirt in the middle of August. It was love ever since.

Oltie has worked all his life. He is a veteran of the Army where he served 8 years in Korea. He retired from Republic Steel after working there for 42 years. Along with working at Republic Steel, he was a full-time farmer, hydroponic tomato farmer and bee keeper. In the late 90s to the present, he has volunteered at Aultman hospital.

Meanwhile, Mary kept herself busy by tending to the farm and raising their children: Jerry of Kent, Peggy (Doug) Dix of Magnolia, and Beth (David) Halley of Oxford, North Carolina. Oltie and Mary have 7 grandchildren

A celebration with their family will take place in December.
