The Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities will host its 2016 street fair on Oct. 8.

The fair is in collaboration with the City of Canton Fair Housing Department and Autism Speaks Ohio. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whipple-Dale Centre located at 2950 Whipple Ave. NW.

More than 80 community agencies, organizations and providers of services for people, birth to senior years, with developmental disabilities will be on hand to help visitors learn about programs available to them in their neighborhood and the greater Stark community.

This first-time event is a melding of two separate resource fairs typically hosted by Stark DD.

"Annually we have hosted a Provider Fair to help individuals with disabilities and their families meet some of the people in Stark County who provide services, whether it's day support, transportation or residential support," said Mary Lou Chizmar, a service and support administration supervisor for Stark DD. "Our Early Childhood staff also hosted a resource event for families of children with disabilities, connecting them with help since many are just getting a disability diagnosis. The 2016 street fair covers all ages so families can learn about a continuum of services."

The Whipple-Dale Center will be set up like a neighborhood, encouraging people to "walk through our community" and meet those who are there to help them. There will also be free food and drink, while supplies last, donated by Angry BBQ. The Stark Fresh Wagon and the Stark County District Library Smartstore will be in the parking lot providing information.

The Stark County Sheriff's Department will also be on site offering their Ident-I-Kid program, including fingerprinting and adding children to their database.

Attendees can also sit in on speakers throughout the day. Topics include Early Childhood Transitions, Moving to Adulthood, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dual Diagnosis/Mental Health Support and Preparing for Employment.

Complete information for the 2016 street fair can be found on the Stark DD website homepage at www.starkdd.org.
