Jean Peters to be remembered at open house

Film star from the 1950s was an East Canton H.S. graduate

Local legend Jean Peters will be remembered during the Osnaburg Historical Society's upcoming open house on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Hours of the open house are 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Werner Inn. The inn is located at 131 East Nassau Street in East Canton. Parking is at the rear of the building. Refreshments will be available.

Elizabeth Jean Peters was born in October of 1926 and was raised on a small farm in East Canton. She graduated from East Canton High School in 1944.

Peters went to college at the University of Michigan and later the Ohio State University. At Ohio State, Peters studied to become a teacher and majored in literature.

While in Columbus, she entered the Miss Ohio State Pageant in the fall of 1945. Peters won the event and was awarded a screen test with 20th Century-Fox as the grand prize. She became a star of the studio in the late 1940s and early 1950s and appeared in 19 films in her career.

The Osnaburg Historical Society will display various items that contain photos of Peters. Scrapbooks, yearbooks and other photos of Jean Peters will be on display.

The society also has a piece of scenery that Jean painted and presented to a friend. The society will play a few films that the local girl starred in during her film career.

Anyone who has photos or items of interest about Jean Peters is asked let a member of the society know.
