MAGNOLIA -- Sandy Valley Local Schools will be a rural pilot with Aultman Hospital in a new program.
Sandy Valley Elementary principal Vic Johnson said during Monday's regular Board of Education meeting that third grade teachers Linda Brunk and Carmen Swihart met with the hospital about the program called Kick the Cans. District officials heard the program is designed for children to learn and practice healthier lifestyles. Johnson said Brunk provided statistics about the dangers of excess sugar and the direct effects on childhood diabetes.
As the district finished preparations for a new school year, board members heard Sandy Valley eighth and 10th graders will once again participate in the ACT ASPIRE test. That assessment is a predictor of how students will perform on the actual ACT test. Every junior at Sandy Valley will also take the ACT.
Board members heard adult education courses will be taught in the district in October. Michelle Allison-Palmer will instruct classes on the computer program excel. According to a district press release, topics that will be covered include analyzing data to create worksheets, editing and formatting worksheets, using formulas and functions and creating and modifying charts.
All three building principals commended the district custodial and maintenance staff for preparing the buildings for the new school year. Transportation coordinator Doug Neading said outdoor maintenance projects are being finished at the district this week.

/ APPROVED extended time for the 2015-2016 school year at three days for Ryan White and Steffanie McCoy;
/ APPROVED extended time for the 2016-2017 school year for personnel as follows: Laura Dotson, 10 days; Christopher Carnes, 35 days; Alexa Baker, 15 days; Allison-Palmer, five days, Deborah Simonetti, 10 days; Steffani McCoy, 15 days; Ryan White, 15 days and Melissa Dale, 15 days;
/ ACCEPTED the resignation of reserve volleyball coach Danielle Grooms;
/ APPROVED supplemental contracts for junior varsity cheerleading supervisor Whitney Barrick, boys assistant soccer coach Jason Overly and girls assistant soccer coach Thomas Losiewski.
/ APPROVED open enrollment students for the 2016-2017 school year including Kourtnie Blanton, Elizabeth Casto, Olivia Beros, Dax Baylon, Keith Pettry, Nicholas Gardner, Savannah Gardner and Kaylie Herstine;
/ WENT into executive session to discuss employment.
