CANTON -- A free Junior Hunger-Fighter Camp will be held Aug. 11 conducted by the Stark County Hunger Task Force.

Youths will decorate and stuff snack bags for the hunger task force's Backpack for Kids program during the camp from 1-3 p.m. in the community campus at Goodwill, 408 9th St. SW.

Signup on line at starkhunger.org//event//juniorcamp or call 330-455-6667. Kids of all ages are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.

Snacks for the "campers" and face painting will be provided as they learn about the Stark County Hunger Task Force Backpack for Kids programs and ways anyone can help fight local hunger.

As an option, campers can bring a small snack item to go in a decorated bag or can donate additional items for the fall backpacks: Most needed items include microwave meals, granola bars, shelf stable milk, juice boxes and instant oatmeal.

The Backpack for Kids programs supply critical weekend meals to more than 700 children each week at five local elementary schools in Canton, Plain Township and Massillon. Students at risk of weekend hunger receive a bag containing two breakfasts, two lunches and two snacks to take home for the weekend.

The Junior Hunger-Fighter Camp is another 35th anniversary event for Stark County Hunger Task Force. From humble beginnings in 1981, board, staff and volunteers continue to fight hunger by providing free groceries to neighbors struggling with food insecurity.

The anniversary celebration serves as a tribute to those generous and benevolent pioneers who envisioned a Stark County where all families would have food on the table and no children would go to bed with their bellies growling.

Stark County Hunger Task Force at 408 9th St. SW, Canton, leads the battle against hunger in Stark County. Operating almost entirely on donations, the task force provides free groceries to an average of nearly 28,000 individuals every month through more than 30 food pantries, "Backpacks for Kids" programs and an emergency pantry.
