I just finished preaching a series of sermons on Bearing Witness to the Truth from Acts 3-4. I was astounded how the Holy Spirit worked with great power through ordinary folks to bear witness to the truth to a culture that was bent on eradicating Jesus and his Truth.
The political, judicial, and religious hierarchy seemed bent on silencing these people called Christians to the point of intimidating and arresting them. They even threatened them not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus - what we know in our country as our freedom of speech or more specifically, our First Amendment right.
One thing is certain, as the Christian community continues to bear witness to the Truth, so the anti-Christian culture is bearing witness to their own truth. They are not Christian, not following Christ, not working in partnership with the Holy Spirit. At best, they are nominal Christian (by name only), but only then as it benefits them or their cause.
They are all about being able to exercise and demand their personal, constitutional rights, but many do their best to silence the Christian community.
It was in this environment that the young church grew by leaps and bounds.
The greater the opposition, the greater the power of God was poured out on the followers of Jesus, the Christ. In such opposition the church prayed for boldness to proclaim the love of God through Christ Jesus and Him crucified. The result was thousands were converted and became Christians.
The Magnolia United Methodist Church has found a powerful and popular, yet subtle and silent way of bearing witness to the Truth by making and distributing little white crosses.
It is amazing that thousands of crosses have been distributed and how far reaching this project has become. They are being planted by ordinary people who have an implanted faith in Jesus Christ.
As stated in "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," "as He has died to make men holy, let us die to make men free / His Truth is marching on!"
