Today is Valentine's Day-- a day to celebrate love, marriage and commitment.
The Press-News recently asked our readers to submit information about a couple, married at least 25 years, who have been an inspiration to them in some way. Three couples were nominated to be highlighted in this issue.
SAM & MARGUERITE MEDLEY
Sam and Marguerite Medley started dating in high school.
He was the jock football player and she was the cute little cheerleader at East Sparta High. Sixty-one and half years later they are still holding hands.
They have been so involved in helping East Sparta through many hours of unselfish service with the monthly community suppers and yearly homecomings. Both have been honored as "Person of the Year" for their dedication and service to the village.
Sam owned and operated Sam's Barbershop in East Sparta for 42 years. He is currently a member of the American Legion Isaac L. Kinney Post 244 and has been post commander.
Marguerite is a member of the East Sparta Civic Association.
They are the proud parents of Dr. Susan Medley of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Rita Christie of East Sparta. They are the grandparents of Olivia and Sammy Christie, both of East Sparta.
Sam and Marguerite are the reason to celebrate Valentine's Day. Cupid's arrow has penetrated their hearts deeply.

BOB & PAT SPENCER
I cannot begin to tell you how lucky I feel to have them as my parents and I know my siblings and their grandchildren feel the same way!
My parents were married 53 years ago this past Jan. 9. We actually had a fabulous 50th wedding anniversary party three years ago at Slutz Park in Sandyville to celebrate. It was a very frigid January and despite the horrible weather, over 160 people showed up to honor them at the party. After it was all over, mom and dad said they could not believe that many people would bother to come to a party in their honor.
My parents inspire me because they live for us. They always put their children and grandchildren first, above all else. They are just simple good people who always try to do the right thing. They are unselfish and always help anyone in need whenever they can. I can truly say they are the best people I know.
They are still in love after 53 years. It is too cute! They always hold hands no matter where they go. They do bicker once in awhile which is funny as my nephew lays down the law when driving in the car.....no bickering while driving, Nunny and Papa!
Mom lays out daddy's pills each morning and daddy always buys her Chanel No. 5 perfume. They travel all over any chance they get and are proud to announce how many different Starbucks they have visited in almost every state in the USA.
The greatest thing I can say is, that it is and always has been, so comforting to just know they are always there for us. I wish every child in the world could have this absolute blessing in their lives. It would make for a much better world.
They are truly Valentine sweethearts.
The Spencers were married Jan. 9, 1960, and their family includes daughter and son-in-law Teresa and John Lewis, son and daughter-in-law John and Laura Spencer and daughter Christine Spencer; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Their story was submitted by their daughter Teresa.
DANE & SALLY RUFF
Allan Dane Ruff and Sarah Ann (Thomas) Ruff, of Louisville, were married on July 29, 1947. Their ceremony was at First Friends Church in Cleveland.
They have two daughters- Judy (Neil) Orchard, also of Louisville (a teacher in the Sandy Valley Local School District) and Marriann (Tim) Bullard of Houston, Texas. They have seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Devotion to God and one another is the foundation of their marriage. Topping their wedding cake were the words: "Each for the other and both for the Lord."
They celebrated their 65th anniversary in July 2012 with a family get-together at First Friends Church in Canton.
